Georgia to Host Historic Fencing World Championships at Olympic Palace

A Landmark Moment for Georgian Fencing

For the first time in history, Georgia is set to welcome the global fencing community for the 2025 World Championships, taking place from 20 to 30 July in the vibrant capital of Tbilisi. With final preparations underway, the city is ready to transform into the beating heart of international fencing, as hundreds of athletes from across the globe arrive to compete at the Tbilisi Olympic Palace.

This marks a significant milestone for Georgian sport. While Tbilisi has previously hosted major fencing events — most notably the 2017 Senior European Championships — the upcoming World Championships elevate the country to a new level on the international stage.

“From the 20th, we will see a beautiful spectacle in Tbilisi. The whole world will be here. I am proud that such a small country like Georgia is hosting the World Championship, a high-level tournament, for the first time in history,” said Merab Bazadze, President of the Georgian Fencing Federation.

“Fencing has been becoming more popular in Georgia every year in recent years. It has covered all regions, including Tbilisi and beyond. This event will greatly contribute to the development of fencing. A lot of people will come, and I am glad that this elite sport will become a priority sport in Georgia.”

EFC President Sends a Message of Support

Ahead of the championships, Pascal Tesch, President of the European Fencing Confederation, shared his best wishes with the fencing family:

“As President of the European Fencing Confederation, I wish all participants at the World Championships in Tbilisi thrilling bouts and the success your dedication deserves. Let’s honor our sport, compete with integrity, and make lasting memories together.
A special cheer for our European athletes—give it your all and make us proud!”

The Olympic Palace Becomes Fencing Capital

With competitions in all three weapons — foil, epee, and sabre — and both individual and team formats, the World Championships will offer nine days of intense and inspiring fencing. The event opens with preliminary rounds for women’s sabre and men’s foil, before culminating in the finals and medal ceremonies that promise to draw spectators and fans worldwide.

Each day at the Olympic Palace will bring new stories: young champions rising to the moment, nations battling for supremacy, and the world watching as dreams are made — or broken — on the piste.

More than just a competition, the World Championships are a celebration of sport’s unifying power. For Georgia, hosting such an event offers an opportunity to showcase not only its athletes, but also its organisational strength, cultural richness, and deepening commitment to Olympic values.

From the first pool bout to the final team clash on 30 July, Tbilisi will be the centre of the fencing universe — a moment of pride for the country, and an inspiration for the next generation.
