European nations shine on the penultimate day of the World Championships

The penultimate day of the World Fencing Championships brought new reasons to celebrate for European fans as the men’s sabre teams took the piste in style. Italy delivered a thrilling performance, claiming the world title, while Hungary secured silver and Romania impressed with a bronze.

Italian dominance and fierce rivalries

The Italian quartet of Luca Curatoli, Michele Gallo, Matteo Neri, and Pietro Torre lived up to expectations, showing sharp tactics, speed, and precision throughout the day. After a tense semifinal win over Hungary, they stepped confidently into the final and never looked back, clinching gold to the delight of the home crowd.

Hungary, led by three-time Olympic champion Áron Szilágyi alongside Csanád Gémesi, Nicolas Iliasz, and Krisztián Rabb, proved once again why they remain one of the most feared sabre nations in the world. Their path to silver was marked by high-quality fencing and impressive teamwork.

Romania, however, stole many headlines with their outstanding bronze medal finish. Vlad Covaliu, George Dragomir, Radu Nițu, and Razvan Ursachi showcased fearless fencing and relentless determination. Already runners-up at last year’s European Championships, this young team is rapidly establishing itself as a future powerhouse in men’s sabre. Their victory in the bronze medal match underlined just how competitive they have become on the world stage.

Women's foil: France and Italy on the podium

On the same day, the women’s foil team event concluded with the United States taking gold, leaving European teams to fight for the remaining podium spots. France, with Anita Blaze, Eva Lacheray, Morgane Patru, and Pauline Ranvier, earned silver after a strong campaign that kept the crowd on edge until the final bout. Italy added another medal to its tally, with Anna Cristino, Arianna Errigo, Martina Favaretto, and Alice Volpi stepping onto the podium for bronze.

European fencing looks ahead

The men’s sabre event was a showcase of European excellence, with three of the continent’s teams standing among the world’s best. The rise of Romania is a story to watch, while Italy and Hungary continue to set the standard at the top.
