In Memoriam: Farewell to Duma
In Memoriam
Remembering the Life and Legacy of Veselko Dumitrov (1971–2025)
A Dedicated Servant of European Fencing
It is with profound sorrow that the European fencing community bids farewell to Veselko “Duma” Dumitrov, who passed away in 2025. On behalf of the European Fencing Confederation, President Pascal Tesch shared the news with deep regret, honouring Duma as a leader, coach, and friend who gave so much to the sport.
Mr. Dumitrov served with distinction as a member of the EFC Executive Committee from 2018 to 2021. President Tesch described his years of service as “marked by tireless commitment to the advancement of fencing” and noted the lasting imprint he left on the community.
From Competitor to Global Mentor
Born in Zrenjanin, a city with a proud fencing tradition, Duma first distinguished himself as a competitor, winning multiple national titles. He soon turned to coaching, dedicating his life to guiding new generations of athletes. His career took him across the globe — from Serbia and Slovenia to Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, and most recently to India, where he worked with young fencers in Ahmedabad.
“Wherever he went, he built bridges,” President Tesch reflected. “He carried with him not only knowledge, but also the passion and human warmth that inspired athletes and colleagues alike.”
A Scholar and Innovator
Mr. Dumitrov was also the author of the first — and still the only — modern handbook for fencing coaches in the Serbian language. President Tesch highlighted this as “a true legacy of his scholarly dedication and his vision for professionalising coaching in our sport.” Always forward-thinking, Duma looked for new ways to help fencing grow and thrive, leaving behind a body of work that will continue to guide coaches in years to come.
A Man of Warmth and Friendship
Beyond his professional achievements, Duma will be remembered for his personal qualities: his generosity, his humour, and the unique ability to turn colleagues into lifelong friends. “He brought people together with his smile, his kindness, and his optimism,” President Tesch recalled. “Those who have met him will never forget him.”
A Lasting Legacy
On behalf of the European Fencing Confederation, Pascal Tesch extended deepest condolences to Duma’s family, his students, and his many friends worldwide. “His legacy, both on and off the piste, will endure in the hearts of all who knew him,” he said.
Farewell, Duma.
