Sandro Bazadze shines on home piste as Europe celebrates World Championship medals
A Victory That Moved a Nation
Day 2 of the World Fencing Championships in Tbilisi brought the first gold medal to the host nation — and in the most emotional way possible. Sandro Bazadze, the face of Georgian fencing, fulfilled a lifelong dream by becoming World Champion on home soil.
In front of an ecstatic home crowd, Bazadze navigated the men’s sabre tableau with a mix of determination, speed, and tactical clarity. His final match against Jean-Philippe Patrice of France was electric — a moment that went far beyond sport, as the arena erupted when the decisive hit was scored.
This title crowns a remarkable career and a golden generation of Georgian fencing, while reminding the entire fencing community what it means to triumph in front of your people.
Also standing proudly on the podium were Ahmed Hesham of Egypt and Luca Curatoli of Italy, both claiming well-deserved bronze medals after strong performances throughout the day.
Women’s Foil: Europe on the Podium
In the women’s foil event, Lee Kiefer of the United States secured the world title, but the European presence on the podium was remarkable and worth celebrating. Pauline Ranvier of France earned silver, while Italy confirmed the depth of its foil school with Anna Cristino and Martina Favaretto both taking bronze.
The emotional journeys of these athletes highlight the fierce competition and evolving landscape of women’s foil — and European fencers continue to be at the heart of it.
Support the European Athletes
As the Championships unfold, we invite the fencing community to continue supporting our European athletes in Tbilisi. Each bout is a story of preparation, ambition, and courage — and your support from home makes a difference.
