ECH Genova

The Most Attended in a Decade

The 2025 edition of the European Fencing Championships, held in the vibrant coastal city of Genova, marked a historic milestone as the most attended ECH of the last ten years. With 481 athletes participating, the event surpassed all recent editions — including Düsseldorf 2019 (448) and Novi Sad 2018 (446). This record-breaking turnout reflects not only the rising enthusiasm for fencing across the continent but also the post-Olympic momentum that continues to fuel national programmes.

France Leads in Gold, Italy Shines in Numbers

On the piste, France reigned supreme in the medal rankings, taking 5 golds, along with 3 silver and 1 bronze, across individual and team events. One of their standout moments came from the women’s sabre team, which clinched their fourth European team title, bringing an emotional and symbolic triumph to French fencing.

Italy, while finishing second in golds, claimed the highest number of medals overall — 13 in total, with 3 golds, 2 silvers, and an impressive 8 bronze medals. The host nation displayed remarkable consistency, from the breathtaking comeback by the men’s foil team to Guillaume Bianchi’s crowning as European champion in individual foil. It was a celebration of depth, resilience, and renewed ambition.

Ukraine, Hungary and a Spread of Medals

Ukraine secured 2 golds and 1 silver, placing third overall and delivering some of the most memorable moments of the championships. Roman Svichkar’s gold in men’s épée and the silver of Alina Komashchuk in the women’s sabre, stood as testaments to their continued excellence.

Hungary remained a strong force with 1 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronze medals — including a spirited performance by their men’s sabre team. PolandGreat BritainEstoniaSwitzerland, and the Netherlands all reached the podium, reflecting the growing competitive depth across Europe.

Historic Moments and Rising Nations

One of the emotional peaks of the championship came from Switzerland, as their women’s épée team won their first-ever silver medal at a European Championships. Composed of Brunner, the Favre sisters, and Fiona Hatz, the team showed exceptional composure and unity throughout the event.

Elsewhere, Spain and Germany made their presence felt with bronze medals, while the diversity of podium nations highlighted how fencing is flourishing across the continent.

Passing the Torch to Tallinn

As the sun set on Genova’s unforgettable week of fencing, the closing ceremony brought a symbolic and emotional handover: the European Fencing Confederation flag was officially passed to the Estonian Fencing Federation. Tallinn, the host city of the 2026 European Championships, is now preparing to welcome the continent’s best next season — with high expectations and great enthusiasm.
