Ukraine Claims Épée Gold, Italy Triumphs in Foil Finale
The 2025 European Fencing Championships in Genova concluded with powerful emotion and high-level fencing as the final two team events — Women’s Épée and Men’s Foil — brought six days of intense competition to a memorable close.
Ukraine’s Unity Leads to Gold
The Ukrainian team — Inna Brovko, Vlada Kharkova, Olena Kryvytska, and Anna Maksymenko — displayed remarkable cohesion and composure throughout the day. Their most challenging moment came early in the quarter-finals, where they edged past Hungary in a dramatic priority finish. From that point on, they fenced with increasing confidence. A strong semi-final victory over the reigning champions from Italy set the tone for their final performance — a convincing win over Switzerland to secure the gold.
For Switzerland, the silver medal marks a historic milestone. While the Swiss men have had standout results in épée— the women’s team had previously delivered more modest results on the international stage. With Pauline Brunner, Angeline and Aurore Favre, and Fiona Hatz, this campaign was a breakthrough and a proud moment for Swiss fencing.
Italy, represented by Rossella Fiamingo, Lucrezia Paulis, Giulia Rizzi, and Alberta Santuccio, captured the bronze medal after a thrilling comeback in the match against Estonia. Behind until the final bout, they managed to equalise and win on priority — a testament to their resilience and fighting spirit.
Italian Flair in Men’s Foil
Italy’s foil squad — Guillaume Bianchi, Alessio Foconi, Filippo Macchi, and Tommaso Marini — closed the championships on a high note, thrilling the home crowd with a dramatic gold medal performance.
Their semi-final against Team AIN was anything but easy. Facing a significant deficit, the Italians launched a determined comeback to reach the final. Against France, they started strong and maintained control until the eighth bout, when they briefly lost their lead. In the closing match, European Champion Guillaume Bianchi stepped up once again, regaining control and securing victory for the team.
France — with Anas Anane, Pierre Loisel, Maxime Pauty, and Rafael Savin — earned silver, while the bronze went to Team AIN: Kirill and Anton Borodachev, Aleksandr Kerik, and Vladislav Mylnikov, who had shown strong form earlier in the day.
Farewell to Genova 2025
As the final medals were awarded and national flags raised, the European Championships in Genova came to a heartfelt conclusion. The week brought not only podium finishes, but unforgettable stories of teamwork, resilience, and sporting excellence.
